Collecting Resources
Often, resources about the practices of non-dominant Jewish communities – i.e. Ethiopians, Mizrahim, Sefaradim – are difficult to find, not only via popular search engines, but outside of the communities in which they are practiced. We have done our best to link to resources in a variety of languages (or websites with multiple language options) in our effort to center Mizrahi, Sefaradi, and Ethiopian practices as normative, natural, and accessible. We also plan to translate parts of our website according to demand, and translate musical resources from Hebrew.
Collectivizing Knowledge
We have put our heads and collective music theory knowledge together to transcribe as many songs as we can, and we hope to expand into transliterating and transcribing song-resources that are predominantly in Hebrew and not in Idelsohn’s thesaurus – as well as accepting submissions of melodies from community members.
Platform for Community Input
We understand that our resources are meant for uses by multiple communities. If you want to learn a song that is not within your musical tradition and alter the transliterated lyrics to better reflect a pronunciation with which you are more familiar, we use a free and open-source software called Musescore for our transcriptions, which are free to download.
